Overview
Keeping medication visible and near water, tied to an existing daily habit (toothbrushing, coffee) via habit stacking.
Why it works
Habit stacking (BJ Fogg, James Clear) anchors new routines to existing ones. Visual cue + habit stack is among the most robust behaviour-change techniques in the literature. ADHD object permanence is real — if you can't see it, you won't take it.
Steps
- 1
Get a weekly pill organiser so you can see at a glance whether today is done.
- 2
Place it next to an existing daily cue: coffee maker, toothbrush, kettle.
- 3
Flip it over or close the compartment when taken — the visual change is the confirmation signal.
Common Pitfalls
- Forgetting to refill the organiser on Sunday — set a reverse alarm.
- Moving the station "temporarily" and losing the anchor.
Find an ADHD-informed therapist
Tactical systems are not a substitute for professional support. If ADHD is untreated or comorbid, talk to someone qualified.
Considering an ADHD assessment?
Tactical systems help, but a formal assessment can open doors to additional support — including medication, workplace accommodations, and specialised therapy.
